Contradiction: Spot the Liar!

Kate Vine has been found dead in the English village of Edenton. The official verdict is suicide. Detective Inspector Jenks does not believe the official verdict. Everyone in the village has a story, and at least some of them are lying. The mechanic is simple: find the lie.

Contradiction is a full-motion video murder mystery adventure in which every scene is played by real actors and filmed on location in an English village. The player guides DI Jenks through interviews with the suspects and residents of Edenton, collecting statements and then flagging pairs of contradictory statements to confront characters with. Identifying a contradiction breaks the character's story open and advances the investigation. The entirely FMV format — no illustrated backdrops, no avatars, no text dialogue trees — gives the game a quality closer to interactive television than to conventional adventure games. The script was written and the game designed and composed entirely by Tim Follin, a veteran video game music composer, with a total production budget of £6,000 raised through Kickstarter. The game is approximately seven hours long and has accumulated a 97% Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.

Key Features: • Entirely FMV: every scene played by real actors filmed on location in an English village • Contradiction mechanic: flag pairs of conflicting statements to break a suspect's story • DI Jenks investigates the apparent suicide of Kate Vine across the village of Edenton • designed, written and scored entirely by one person on a £6,000 Kickstarter budget
