Zagreus wants out of the Underworld. His father Hades says no. Every attempt is a new story.

* Prices for US region
Zagreus is the son of Hades, god of the dead. He hates the Underworld and wants out. His father says no. The Olympians — Athena, Poseidon, Artemis, Ares and the rest — are willing to help, each offering their own divine boon to tip the scales. Every attempt to escape is different. Every death sends Zagreus back to the House of Hades — but with new relationships built, new information revealed, and new combinations of weapons and powers to try next time.

Hades is the game that defined and elevated the roguelite genre, proving that procedurally generated runs could support a fully authored narrative. The House of Hades serves as the story's home — between each escape attempt, Zagreus converses with dozens of characters from Greek mythology, each with their own arc that advances across hundreds of runs. No dialogue repeats until exhausted; the world feels alive and attentive to what the player has done. Six weapons called Infernal Arms, each with four Aspects unlocked through play, create wildly different combat feels. Boons from different Olympians can be combined in elaborate synergies. The Heat system layers additional challenge conditions for veteran players. A single run through the four chambers takes thirty to sixty minutes and ends in either escape or a dramatic return — both satisfying. Hades won GOTY from over fifty publications and award shows in 2020, becoming the first video game to win a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation.
