Start with a hamlet, end with a kingdom. Build, tax, defend and prosper in a charming medieval world.

A small clearing. A few villagers. Some wood and stone nearby. The question is whether the hamlet becomes a town, the town becomes a city, and the city builds walls worthy of defending what it has grown into — because the threats will come regardless of whether the walls are ready.

Kingdoms and Castles is a medieval city-builder and castle defence simulation in which the player grows a settlement from a handful of homes into a complex layered kingdom while managing food supply, tax income, happiness, population health and defences against Viking raids, dragon attacks and plague. Every villager is individually simulated, walking between their home, their workplace and the market, reacting to weather, illness and war. The game's distinctive visual style is clean, colourful and immediately readable — the chunky voxel-style buildings and hand-animated inhabitants give the city life without clutter. Castle building is a freeform construction system where walls, towers, gates and moats can be placed in any configuration, and the game tests them during raids with real pathfinding. Seasons cycle through the year, affecting farm yields, movement and mood. The game has been developed continuously by a solo developer since launch in 2017.
