Monument Valley is an isometric puzzle game in which the player guides Princess Ida through a series of hand-crafted levels built from impossible architecture inspired by the work of M.C. Escher. Each level is a three-dimensional optical illusion in which rotating or manipulating the structure changes which surfaces connect, creating paths where none appeared to exist. The Crow People block Ida's progress and must be redirected using levers, movable platforms and the geometry of the level itself. The ten chapters of the base game are accompanied by the Forgotten Shores expansion, adding eight more levels. The experience is short, quiet and complete — designed to be played in a single session and valued for the quality of each individual puzzle rather than volume. Monument Valley won the Apple Design Award and a BAFTA Games Award in 2014 and was featured as an artefact in the Netflix series House of Cards.
