A geomagnetic storm. A crashed bush plane. The Canadian wilderness in winter. How long can you last?

* Prices for US region
A mysterious geomagnetic storm has knocked out every electronic device on Earth. Somewhere in the remote wilderness of northern Canada, a bush plane has crashed. Will Mackenzie — the pilot — wakes up alone in a frozen forest. The nearest town is many days away. The temperature is dropping. Wolves are hunting. Every can of food, every stick of firewood and every bandage counts. This is the Quiet Apocalypse.

The Long Dark is a meditative, atmospheric first-person survival game widely regarded as the benchmark of the genre. There are no zombies. There is no combat. The only enemies are cold, hunger, thirst, exhaustion, wildlife and the wilderness itself. Survival Mode is a freeform sandbox across nine interconnected regions of Great Bear Island — a hand-crafted landscape of boreal forests, frozen lakes, mountain passes and abandoned settlements. Four difficulty settings range from relaxed exploration to Interloper, a brutal permadeath mode with no rifles and scarce supplies. WINTERMUTE is the episodic story mode, following Will and Dr. Astrid Greenwood through five chapters — the final Episode 5 released March 2026. The Tales from the Far Territory expansion adds new regions and gameplay systems to Survival Mode. The sequel, BLACKFROST: The Long Dark 2, is in development with co-op support.
