Chernarus is infected. Sixty survivors on one server. No map markers. No tutorials. No second chances.

The post-Soviet country of Chernarus has been devastated by an unknown virus that turns the infected into frenzied, hostile creatures. The survivors — sixty players on a single persistent server — compete and cooperate in a 230 km² hand-crafted landscape modelled on real Czech geography. There are no missions. No objectives. No tutorials. You spawn on the coast with nothing, and you must find food, water, clothing and weapons before the environment kills you — all while every other survivor is making the same calculation about whether to trust you or shoot you on sight.

DayZ is the original hardcore multiplayer survival game — born as a mod for Arma 2 in 2012, it spent five years in early access as a standalone before reaching 1.0 in December 2018. The game conveys player state entirely through observation: no mini-map, no waypoints, no HUD health bars — only your character's posture, breathing and visible condition tell you how close to death you are. Every encounter with another player is a genuine moral decision. Teaming with strangers is dangerous; killing them and taking their gear is rational. The result is some of the most memorable emergent storytelling in any game. Two official DLC maps expand the base game: Livonia (163 km²) and the upcoming Frostline map (267 km², planned 2026). Steam Workshop hosts thousands of community mods and custom servers.
