Barry Steakfries burst into a secret laboratory, grabbed a machine gun jetpack and started running. The scientists behind him have deployed every obstacle the facility has: zappers, homing missiles, laser fences and armed drones. The lab is infinite. The run ends when Barry runs out of luck.

Jetpack Joyride is a side-scrolling endless runner in which holding the screen fires the jetpack upward and releasing it lets Barry drop, with the player navigating a continuous corridor of obstacles at increasing speed. The three main hazard types — zappers, missiles and lasers — each have distinct patterns that require different evasion timing. Vehicle pickups spawn mid-run and transform Barry into a Teleporter, Gravity Suit, Profit Bird or other temporary vehicle with unique movement mechanics. Gadgets are equippable modifiers selected before each run, providing bonuses like coin magnets, head starts and gravity belts. Missions provide structured short-term goals that unlock new gadgets. A spin token at the end of each run activates a slot machine that may grant continuation, bonus coins or new rewards. The game was Apple's free App of the Week on launch, driving massive early adoption, and won Apple Game of the Year for 2011.
