Six hundred years ago, the Andromeda Initiative launched from the Milky Way — a fleet of arks carrying hundreds of thousands of colonists in cryo-sleep, bound for a new galaxy and a fresh start for humanity. You wake up as Ryder, son or daughter of the Initiative's chief Pathfinder, in the middle of a crisis: the golden worlds selected as colony sites are hostile and unliveable, a hostile alien species called the Kett is attacking, and your father is dead. The role of Pathfinder falls to you. Your mission: find humanity a home in Andromeda.

Mass Effect: Andromeda trades the linear structure of the original trilogy for an open-world approach across multiple alien planets, each with their own ecosystems, vaults built by an ancient civilisation called the Remnant, and political dynamics between the Initiative's factions. The combat system is the most agile in the series — no class locks, a jetpack enabling vertical traversal and aerial combat, and three simultaneous ability loadouts switchable mid-fight. The game was criticised heavily at launch for facial animations and technical issues, but received significant patches that improved it considerably. Revisited by players years later, it has found a more appreciative audience for its world-building, companions and combat.
