It is 2036. A quarter century after the nuclear war, Artyom has spent years searching for signs of life beyond the Moscow Metro — and finally, he finds them. Fleeing the tunnels aboard a heavily modified steam locomotive called the Aurora, Artyom, his wife Anna and a band of Spartan Rangers set east across Russia in search of a place where humanity can begin again. What follows is a year-long journey through the ruins of a continent — from the frozen Volga River in spring to the irradiated Caspian Sea desert in summer, through the forests of the Taiga and into the depths of nuclear winter.

Metro Exodus expands the series into semi-open sandbox levels, each representing a different season and biome of post-apocalyptic Russia. Artyom can scavenge, craft and customise weapons at any workbench — stripping parts from enemy guns, fitting scopes, suppressors and magazine types to suit the mission. Gas mask filters degrade in real time and must be replaced mid-combat. The game blends linear, atmospheric tunnel segments with large open environments full of side missions and hidden stories. The PC Enhanced Edition, released in 2021, adds full ray-tracing, DLSS and improved global illumination and requires an RTX GPU as minimum spec. Two story DLC expansions — The Two Colonels and Sam's Story — add new playable characters and environments.
