The zombies want your brains. The only things standing between them and your front door are the plants on your lawn. Sunflowers generate the sun that pays for the plants. Peashooters slow the advance. Cherry Bombs clear entire columns. The question is always: which plant, which lane, which moment.

Plants vs. Zombies is a lane-based tower defence game in which the player places plants on a grid lawn to stop waves of advancing zombies from reaching the house. Each plant has a specific function: Sunflowers generate sun currency, Peashooters deal damage, Wall-nuts block, Snow Peas slow, Chompers devour a single zombie, and Cherry Bombs clear a three-by-three area instantly. Zombie variants introduce new challenges — the Cone Head has extra health, the Pole Vaulter leaps over the first plant it encounters, the Gargantuars require sustained focus to bring down. Adventure mode spans fifty levels across five environments: day, night, pool, fog and roof, each introducing new mechanics and plant slots. Mini-games, Puzzle mode, Survival mode and the Zen Garden provide substantial additional content beyond the main campaign. The game won multiple Game of the Year awards in 2009 and its soundtrack, composed by Laura Shigihara, became a cult classic.
