Six years after Raccoon City, Leon S. Kennedy is now a government agent. Resident Evil 4 is a ground-up rebuild of the 2005 game widely credited with reinventing the action genre, now rebuilt in Capcom's RE Engine with full third-person over-the-shoulder mechanics and modernised combat that retains the original's resource management and tension while layering in fluid movement, a knife parry system and vastly expanded stealth options. The village, castle and island structure of the original returns, each section escalating in scale and enemy complexity. Ashley's escort mechanics are redesigned to make her a capable survivor rather than a liability. The Merchant returns with his distinctive shop and weapon upgrade system. The Separate Ways DLC adds a full Ada Wong campaign with an expanded story. The Mercenaries mode returns as free post-launch content. PSVR2 support was added as free DLC in December 2023.
