Paris, 1789. In this version of history, Louis XVI responded to the Revolution not with troops but with an army of automaton soldiers built by master clockmaker Vaucanson. The automatons are now slaughtering citizens across the city. Aegis is an automaton herself — built as a dancer for Marie Antoinette — and the only one capable of stopping what has been set in motion.

Steelrising is an action RPG souls-like set in an alternate history French Revolution where automaton soldiers have been unleashed on Paris. The player controls Aegis through a historically reconstructed Paris that includes the Bastille, Versailles, the Tuileries and Notre-Dame, each populated with different automaton enemy types and bosses. Combat is built around four weapon categories — Dancer fans, Soldier weapons, Alchemist staves and Bodyguard shields — each with a distinct playstyle and elemental affinities covering freeze, fire and lightning. Elemental buildup staggers and debuffs enemies. A grappling hook provides vertical traversal across the rooftops and landmarks of Paris. The skill tree branches between the four weapon types allowing hybrid builds. Accessibility options cover combat difficulty, making the game available to players who want the setting and story without souls-level challenge. A DLC expansion, Cagliostro's Secrets, adds a new storyline and area.
