Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a 2D side-scrolling platformer that takes the iconic cast out of the Mushroom Kingdom and into the neighboring Flower Kingdom. The core gameplay is completely transformed by the new Wonder Flowers. When collected, these reality-bending items trigger bizarre and spectacular effects that completely alter the level's behavior, such as pipes coming alive and crawling, the perspective shifting, or a massive stampede of enemies rushing across the screen.

The game features a wide roster of playable characters, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and various Toads, alongside Yoshi and Nabbit, who serve as easier options by being immune to enemy damage. Players can utilize creative new power-ups like the Elephant Fruit, which transforms characters into elephants capable of swinging their trunks to attack or store water, as well as the Drill Mushroom and Bubble Flower. Additionally, a new customizable Badge system allows players to equip specific active abilities, such as a grappling vine, or passive bonuses to tailor their playstyle before entering a course.
