Kirby and the Forgotten Land marks the pink hero's first leap into a fully 3D platforming adventure. Players explore a mysterious, post-apocalyptic world where nature has reclaimed the abandoned structures of a past civilization. The primary goal is to navigate these vibrant, linear 3D stages to rescue kidnapped Waddle Dees from the ferocious Beast Pack and uncover the secrets of the forgotten land.

The game expands upon Kirby's classic copy abilities by introducing blueprints that allow players to evolve their powers into stronger, visually distinct forms in Waddle Dee Town. The most significant new mechanic is Mouthful Mode, which lets Kirby wrap himself around massive real-world objects. This allows him to become a car for high-speed driving, a vending machine to shoot juice cans, or a traffic cone to pierce water pipes. The entire adventure can also be played in drop-in local co-op, with the second player controlling Bandana Waddle Dee.
