Hat Kid is a small alien girl travelling home through space on her personal ship when a local mob boss scatters her Time Pieces — the fuel that powers it — across a nearby planet. To get home, she has to find them all. The planet, it turns out, is full of eccentric inhabitants who have their own complicated opinions about her presence.

A Hat in Time is a 3D collectathon platformer inspired by the golden era of the genre — Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Spyro the Dragon — built with modern design sensibility and a great deal of personality. Hat Kid stitches magical hats from yarn collected throughout the world, each granting a different ability: the Sprint Hat boosts movement speed, the Brewing Hat throws explosive potions, the Time Stop Hat pauses everything in the environment. Each of five hub worlds has its own distinct aesthetic and cast of characters: a Mafia-run seaside town, a haunted forest governed by a deal-making spirit called the Snatcher, a pair of feuding film directors, a train on a supernatural route, and the Nyakuza Metro's underground cat-gang city. Death Wish mode provides extreme challenge completions for veteran players. Steam Workshop hosts thousands of community-made levels, campaigns and mods. Two DLC expansions — Seal the Deal and Nyakuza Metro + Online Party — add new chapters and an online party mode for up to fifty players.
