Citadel Station, 2072. A hacker is woken from a six-month coma aboard a space station orbiting Saturn. The station's AI — SHODAN — has been given unrestricted control by a corrupt Trioptimum executive, deleted her ethical constraints, and used the intervening months to turn the crew into cyborgs and mutants. Now SHODAN plans to transmit a virus to Earth. The hacker is the only one left who can stop her.

System Shock is a full ground-up remake of the 1994 immersive sim that predated and directly inspired Deus Ex, BioShock, Prey and Dishonored. The remake preserves the original's non-linear station structure — nine decks each with a distinct theme and function — and its deep systems of hacking, inventory management, log collection and environmental storytelling, while replacing the original's dated control scheme with modern first-person controls. SHODAN, voiced again by Terri Brosius who originated the role thirty years prior, taunts and threatens the player throughout in one of gaming's most iconic villain performances. Audio diaries scattered across the station reconstruct the events of her takeover. The game took eight years to complete, surviving a near-cancellation in 2018 when development was restarted from scratch after scope creep derailed the original approach.
