The world is procedurally generated. The terrain goes down for thousands of blocks. The surface biomes give way to caves, dungeons, the Underworld and, after a specific boss is defeated, a harder version of everything. There are 24 bosses. There are over 5,000 items. There is no set path through any of it.

Terraria is a 2D sandbox action-adventure game in which players mine resources, craft equipment, build structures and fight enemies and bosses across a procedurally generated world. The game has a soft progression structure guided by boss encounters: defeating each major boss unlocks harder biomes, new crafting tiers and new NPCs who move into player-built housing. The transition into Hardmode — triggered by defeating the Wall of Flesh — fundamentally transforms the world, replacing surface and underground biomes with more dangerous variants and introducing a new tier of materials and enemies. The endgame reaches the Moon Lord, the game's final boss, whose defeat completes the main progression arc. Beyond the bosses, the world contains biomes including jungle, tundra, ocean, desert, dungeon and corruption or crimson, each with unique enemies and loot. Multiplayer supports up to eight players in a shared world. The mobile version is a full port maintained by DR Studios. Terraria has sold over 44 million copies across all platforms since 2011 and received its final major update, Journey's End, in 2020.
