A passenger jet crashes on a remote forested peninsula. You survive. Your son Timmy does not — he is dragged into the treeline by a pale, painted figure before you can reach him. You are alone with nothing but the crash site, a survival guide and a lighter. Build a shelter. Find food. Explore the island. Find Timmy. And try not to think too hard about what is watching you from the trees.

The Forest is an open-world survival horror game built around the tension between two things that feel contradictory: the meditative pleasure of building a home in the wilderness, and the creeping dread of what lives in that wilderness. Days are peaceful — chop trees, gather berries, construct walls and traps, dive into caves for resources. Nights bring the cannibals out. A complex AI ecosystem governs their behaviour: they observe your base, send scouts, attack in force only when provoked, and adapt. The caves run deep and strange, connecting to a vast underground world that eventually answers the mystery of the peninsula. Up to eight players can share a world in online co-op. Full Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR support was added in 2018. The successor, Sons of the Forest, was released in 2023.
