Midgar, a city built on plates suspended above the slums below, powered entirely by mako — the lifeblood of the Planet, drained by the Shinra Electric Power Company. Cloud Strife, a mercenary and former SOLDIER operative, joins the eco-terrorist group Avalanche on a mission to blow up Mako Reactor 1. What begins as a paid job pulls him into a conspiracy that runs deeper than any reactor, and reawakens memories of a silver-haired enemy he was sure was dead.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a complete reimagining of the first act of the beloved 1997 original — the Midgar section, expanded from roughly five hours into a full forty-hour game. The story is told with Hollywood production values, rich character development and the boldness to diverge from the source material in significant, story-relevant ways. Combat blends real-time action with a strategic ATB system: each character builds an ATB gauge in real-time that unlocks abilities, magic and items from a paused tactical menu. Three playable characters — Cloud, Barret, Tifa and Aerith — each fight completely differently. The Intergrade version includes Episode INTERmission, a full standalone chapter starring Yuffie Kisaragi. The sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, continues the story beyond Midgar.
