Bavaria, 1518. A murder. A wrongly accused friend. Twenty-five years of choices that reshape a community forever.

Bavaria, 1518. Andreas Maler, a journeyman artist working at Kiersau Abbey, witnesses the murder of a prominent nobleman. His friend is accused. Andreas must investigate — but the truth in 16th century Bavaria is not what a modern detective would recognise. There is no forensic science. The justice system operates on confession, accusation and community pressure. Someone will be condemned regardless of what Andreas finds, and he must decide who that will be.

Pentiment is a narrative adventure game spanning twenty-five years, told in three acts set in 1518, 1525 and 1543. Director Josh Sawyer designed it as a deeply researched portrait of a Bavarian community living through the Reformation and the Peasants' War, where individual choices ripple forward through decades to affect the lives of characters the player grows to know intimately. Every dialogue option reflects Andreas's background — his education, his experiences, the books he has read — and different backgrounds produce genuinely different conversations and outcomes. The visual style renders the entire world as a living illuminated manuscript and early printed book, with speech appearing in period-appropriate typefaces and scene transitions told through marginalia. A built-in glossary explains medieval terms, religious practices and historical context without interrupting the story. Approximately fifteen hours long. Available on Xbox Game Pass day one.

Key Features: • Three-act narrative spanning 25 years • Choices echo across decades affecting the whole community • Andreas's education and background shape every conversation and available dialogue • Living illuminated manuscript visual style • Director Josh Sawyer (Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity)
