Still Wakes the Deep

The Beira D is a North Sea oil rig, December 1975. Caz McLeary is an electrician from Glasgow who took the job to get away from trouble at home. Then the drill hits something it should not have, and the rig begins to come apart in ways that have nothing to do with machinery.

Still Wakes the Deep is a first-person horror game set over the course of a single night aboard an oil rig being destroyed by something that emerged from beneath the seabed. The setting is entirely self-contained — there is no escape, no way off, and the storm outside ensures the North Sea is as lethal as what is inside. The horror is body horror: crewmembers are absorbed and transformed by the entity, and what they become retains just enough of their original appearance and voice to be more disturbing than something entirely alien. Caz is not a fighter; he is an electrician trying to cross a disintegrating structure to reach the radio room, save whoever is still human and find some way to stop what is happening. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and the rig is rendered in extraordinary physical detail. Scottish dialect runs through every line of dialogue. The Chinese Room's characteristic care for character and place means that every crewmember is a person before they are a victim.

Key Features: • North Sea oil rig Beira D: entirely self-contained setting with no escape and no land in any direction • Body horror: crewmembers transformed by the entity while retaining enough humanity to be disturbing • Caz McLeary: an electrician not a fighter, crossing a disintegrating structure to reach the radio room • Scottish dialect throughout · character-driven horror where every crewmember is a person first
